Abstract:
[Objective] The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between type II diabetes, the IL-1β(+3953) genetic polymorphisms, and periodontitis in a population-based study. [Methods] Blood samples were collected and analyzed for genotyping of IL-1B (+3953) polymorphisms. [Results] For allele frequency analysis, the frequency of allele I/II was significantly higher in the chronic diabetic and periodontitis group than periodontitis or diabetic group (P<0.05). There was a gene-environmental interaction because diabetic subjects bearing a variant IL-1 genotype I/II had an enhanced risk for periodontal disease in comparison with their IL-1 wild-type counterparts. [Conclusions] These data confirm that there is a trend suggesting that allele I/II at IL-1β(+3954) is over-represented among diabetics with periodontal disease. Subjects with type II diabetes have an increased risk for periodontitis, which is aggravated further if combined with the variant IL-1A/1B genotype.
